About Anthropic
- Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
About the role
- We are looking for a Corporate Accountant to join our Corporate Accounting Operations team at Anthropic. You will work as a key preparer across the monthly and quarterly close cycle and work cross-functionally across the organization to solve complex problems on a regular basis. .
- This is an opportunity for someone who thrives in ambiguity, moves quickly without sacrificing accuracy, and genuinely enjoys building better processes — not just maintaining them. If you are looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact on the financial infrastructure of an innovative company, come join us in our mission to build cutting-edge, safe AI.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a primary preparer across month-end and quarter-end close activities spanning various corporate accounting areas
- Prepare and own balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and flux analysis commentary across your portfolio of accounts, that may include leases, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, accruals, and payroll-related accruals
- Prepare and maintain technical accounting memos, documenting conclusions in accordance with US GAAP and ensuring audit-ready support
- Support and operate within the company’s internal controls framework, with a focus on SOX compliance and control documentation
- Identify repetitive, rules-based accounting tasks and build scalable workflows — including leveraging Claude and other tools — to reduce manual effort and increase accuracy
- Collaborate with Technical Accounting on complex transactions, policy development, and application of new or evolving accounting standards
- Support external audit requests and ensure timely delivery of audit-ready schedules and supporting documentation
- Contribute to system implementations and process improvement initiatives as the team and company continue to scale
You may be a good fit if you
- Hold an active CPA license (required)
- Have 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably in startup or high-growth environments with 2+ years of experience in a public company
- Big 4 Audit background
- Have experience operating across multiple accounting functions (e.g., corporate close, lease accounting, payroll accounting) — comfort with breadth is essential
- Can move between preparer-level execution and technical accounting analysis — writing a technical memo and closing your accruals in the same week should feel familiar
- Have experience working in or building out SOX-compliant control environments
- Are a self-starter who identifies what needs to be done and does it without waiting to be asked
- Communicate clearly and directly with non-accounting partners — you can explain a journal entry to non finance stakeholders
- Are comfortable with ambiguity and can make good decisions with incomplete information
Strong candidates may also
- Have experience working in a fast-paced startup environment
- Workday financials experience or ERP implementation
- Have the ability to meet deadlines without sacrificing the quality of your work product
- Be comfortable with handling ambiguity and working with minimal supervision
- Take the initiative to apply their knowledge of processes and systems and recommend well-considered improvements
- Exhibit knowledge of how to implement a change and good instinct in predicting its effects, and knowledge of how to “get it right” the first time
- Bring genuine curiosity about how AI tools can eliminate low-value, repetitive work from accounting workflows
- The annual compensation range for this role is listed below.
- For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role.
How we're different
- We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
- The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
